SYNOPSIS
Setting: Ancient Greece, a pastoral scene with a flowing river.
ACT I
We arrive at the joyous preparations of Eurydice and her nymphs for her marriage to Orpheus. Fate, however, has different plans for the lovestruck couple. Eurydice is bitten by a snake, and succumbs to death in front of Orpheus. Stricken by grief, he is about to take his own life when his father Apollo (Apollon) appears with a message. Orpheus must enter the Underworld and try to win his lover back through the power of his voice.
ACT II
Orpheus heeds his father’s message and descends into the Underworld. He encounters three souls suffering eternal damnation, Tantale, Ixion and Titye. To ease their suffering, Orpheus sings, soothing their torment. So touching are his songs, that he wins over much of the Underworld’s inhabitants. Perhaps sensing this change, Pluton appears to once again tighten his hold on the realm. But Pluton’s Queen, Proserpine, is touched by his words and insists that Pluton allows Orpheus to lead Eurydice out of the Underworld. But there is a catch, a condition that must be obeyed. Orpheus must never look back as he leads Eurydice. No matter what.
