Sophia Mortensen

Sophia Mortensen has recently performed the poem 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night' by Dylan Thomas and Karl Jenkins’ 'Now the Guns have Stopped' as a soloist and in The Chronicle Singers’ 2026 concert ‘From Ashes, Light’. Sophia debuted her first title role of Iolanthe in the 2022 Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University opera production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Iolanthe’, directed by Stuart Maunder AM and conducted by Johannes Fritzch, former chief conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Her colourful mezzo tones feel at home in a plethora of musical worlds, from the operatic stage to late night jazz bars, and have been heard scatting at Can you Keep a Secret and Queen Street Mall with the Cameron De la Vega Trio.

Others may know her better as Sola, a musical endeavour drawing from the neo soul and jazz likes of Nina Simone and Erykah Badu. Sola’s writing is woven with passion and warmth balanced with her natural improvisation, which she is currently bringing to her first album. On a Sunday morning, Sophia sings at Saint Andrew’s Uniting Church as Mezzo Scholar in Collaboration with Musica Viva Australia. She lives on Yugambeh country and in her free time, Sophia can be found enjoying the sea breeze in her orange hammock after a swim in the Gold Coast surf or painting on her balcony.
