Mattias Lower
Australian tenor Mattias Lower is an experienced performer on both the operatic and concert platform. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Voice and a Master of Music Studies (Vocal Pedagogy) from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and an Honours degree in music from the Adelaide Conservatorium.
Mattias has sung as soloist and chorister with Opera Queensland, State Opera of South Australia, Opera Australia, West London Opera, Guildford Opera, Underground Opera and with Australian touring companies Co-Opera and OzOpera. Mattias joined the chorus of Opera Queensland in 2000 and has sung in many productions.
His operatic roles include Aeneas/The Sailor (Dido and Aeneas), Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi), Le Mari (Les Mamelles de Teresias), Beppe (I Pagliacci), Don Jose/Remendado (Carmen), Camille (The Merry Widow), Cassio (Otello), Gastone (La Traviata) and Chuck/Doctor in the Australian Premiere of The Perfect American. He also performed Tom/The Son in Ross Edwards' Christina's World, which was broadcast on ABC Classic FM.
Recordings include the role of John in A Queen for Sunday by Leslie Julian Jones (conducted by Iain Sutherland) and the role of Zane in The Crushing by Peter Rankine.
Mattias moved to the UK at the end of 2006 to further his study with esteemed coaches and teachers, including Julian Gavin, Raymond Connell, Paula Anglin and David Harper. He also had the opportunity to study movement with Delia Linden.
On the concert stage, Mattias has appeared as tenor soloist in performances of Elijah, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, The Childhood of Christ, St. Nicolas, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang, Handel’s Israel in Egypt and Messiah (Queensland Orchestra/Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra) and Rossini's Petite Messe Solenelle in St John's, Smith Square, London. Mattias has toured throughout Europe as soloist and chorister with the English Concert Singers under the direction of Roy Wales, including destinations Dubrovnik, Istanbul and Salzburg.
In the past decade, Mattias has enjoyed performing Early Music repertoire. In 2015/16 Mattias toured throughout Australia and to Germany as the tenor soloist in Il Ritorno for cutting-edge circus company, Circa, a performance piece based on Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria. In 2018 he performed the role of the Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion and has been the regular tenor soloist for performances of German and French Baroque works with ‘Peter Roennfeldt and Friends’.
Mattias is a Lecturer in Classical Voice at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, where he teaches individual voice lessons as well as performance classes. Mattias is also a founding member of Soirées Musicales Quintette, performing Romantic vocal music in heritage venues, currently in its eleventh season.
